July Monthly Photography Challenge

This month sees us embark on a new approach to our regular photography challenge with the first of our ‘Get Creative’ challenges. Rather than beginning with a broad theme, we will all work from the same everyday object and explore the many different ways it can be interpreted through photography. The emphasis is not on what you photograph, but how you photograph it. In other words, this challenge is about looking beyond the object.

July’s Get Creative Challenge Object: A Drinking Glass

We hope this new format will encourage experimentation, creativity and fresh ways of seeing familiar subjects.

Your aim is not to document what the object is, but to explore how it can be seen differently.

Your image should feature one or more of the following photographic elements:

Story, mood, creative lighting, macro or close-up detail, strong composition, reflection, refraction, shadows, texture, motion, abstract interpretation, portraiture, still life, pattern, colour, shape, negative space, or any other creative technique you wish to explore.

Think beyond simply recording the object. Experiment with light, perspective, focus, and composition to create an image that makes viewers stop and look twice. Give your photograph a creative title that adds to the interpretation or encourages the viewer to think differently about the image.

“Don’t photograph the object. Photograph what the object does to light.”

The object is just your starting point. Your real subject is the light, the shapes, the textures, the emotions, or the story it creates.

Don’t forget your images need to be submitted by email on or before the 16th August 2026. We look forward to viewing all the images at our August meeting.
